COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Two teenagers were nearly caught in the act after unsuccessfully trying to force their way into a southeast Springs business overnight.

The Colorado Springs Police Department said some of its officers were on their way to a call around 1:40 a.m. Wednesday morning when a stolen car drove by. A sergeant told 11 News officers followed the vehicle as it entered an apartment complex near South Academy and Pikes Peak. When the children noticed they were being followed by police, they both abandoned the car and ran away.

After a short chase, officers arrested one of the suspects, identified only as 16 years old. The other ran away.

Minutes after arresting the teen, officers were dispatched to a burglar alarm that went off at the Top Dollar Pawn in the 200 block of South Academy, just a block from where the vehicle stolen was spotted for the first time. Once there, police learned that a car had been rammed into the building, causing significant damage to the exterior, although the burglars were unable to get inside.

The vehicle the teens were driving had significant damage itself, leading police to conclude that the children were driving away from the botched break-in.

The 16-year-old was charged with several crimes and was summoned for juvenile delinquency. They were then returned to their parents.
