Watch the video of Sarah’s science experiment at Coker Elementary School in the video player above.

Are you looking for something fun to do at home that has a little science behind it?

Make a robot that wriggles to draw for you!

Don’t forget to check GMSA @9 on Wednesdays when KSAT meteorologist Sarah Spivey demonstrates and explains the science behind it. To watch, click on the video player above. Check out our Science with Sarah webpage for more fun science experiments!

HERE’S WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • A plastic cup

  • 3 washable markers

  • A permanent marker to decorate

  • Electrical tape

  • Scissors

  • 2 AAA batteries

  • Clothespin

  • piece of paper

EXPERIENCE

  • STEP 1: Draw a silly face on the cup

  • STEP 2: Stick 3 markers on the bottom of the cup and make sure it is straight.

  • STEP 3: Test your engine by matching the cables from the battery to the engine. Tape the wires towards the motor and make sure there is good contact

  • STEP 4: Glue the battery to the back of the mobile robot and the motor to the top of the cup. Make sure the motor hangs from the cup with enough room for a clothespin to turn.

  • STEP 5: Attach a clothespin to the rotating part of the motor and place the moving robot on a piece of paper. It may take a few adjustments here and there, but you should get the robot moving and drawing on the paper underneath… awesome!
