Students from all the county of Prince William gathered to present their scientific prowess at the annual regional science and engineering fair of Prince William-Manassas which was held at Kelly Leadership Center on March 22. The event presented students from the college and high school presenting their innovative projects to a panel of judges. The college division welcomed 154 projects, 187 students and 25 teams, while the senior division welcomed 70 projects, 125 students and 38 teams.

Among the remarkable projects were the following five price projects.

  • Animal sciences: “The effect of microplastics on the fertility of Caenorhabditis ElegansBy Aysha Jafar and Adriana Ponciano, both first year students who attend the Osbourn Park High School.
  • Engineering: “Parametric optimization of the propeller guards for improved hydrodynamic performance and the acoustic profile of submarine vehicles” by Hannah Jansen, a senior to Patriot High School and to the Governor of the @ Innovation Park.
  • Medicine and health: “Succulent surgery: assess the effectiveness of a new suture without knots on Aloe veraBy Lana Wahden, first -year student at Unity Reed High School.
  • Physics: “The effect of the geometry of the nose cone on the aerodynamics of the rockets” by Devika Thampi, a second year student at the Patriot High School.
  • Vegetable sciences: “The allelopathic effects of natural plant extracts on the germination of pervasive species seeds Lolium perenne»By Aerin Kim, senior of Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School and the Governor’s school @ innovation park; And Kayla Minister and Willow Weeks, both elders who attend the Osbourn Park High School and the Governor School @ Innovation Park.

Among many hopes, there was Gray, a student from Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School, who entered her passionate project “effects of biological acids on the preservation of meat and the prevention of microbial growth” in senior division. “I finished it over a period of about three months, and the simple fact of devoting so much time to make me really impatient to present it and essentially make sure that research was not only for me,” she said.

Jada, a participating student of Graham Park Middle School, said: “It’s a fun experience, all the projects are really creative and beautiful.” His project explored the effects of different cleaning methods on soda covers. “I like the way everyone put their minds in what they were doing.”

The Prince William-Manassas Regional Science and Engineering Fair continues to be an essential event year after year, promoting love for science and innovation among young people in the community.

The Science Fair, sponsored by the public schools of Prince William County, the I-66 Express, Mobility Partners, Leidos and Spark, the Education for Pwcs Foundation, provided a platform to young scientists to demonstrate their knowledge and their creativity. The projects ranged from microbiology to advanced robotics, highlighting the various interests and skills of the participants.

The winners of the Grand Prix will qualify for the International Science and Engineering Fair in Columbus, Ohio in May. First and second winners will qualify for the Virginia State and Engineering Fair in April.

A complete list of winners is published on the Web page of the Prince William-Manassas Regional Fair. The list of organizational winners will be continuously updated because organizations will warn what projects they have selected.
