Six Duke faculty were elected from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

The AAAS Stock Exchange is considered one of the most distinct honors in the scientific community.

THE 2024 scholarship classier consists of 471 scientists, engineers and innovators in 24 AAAS disciplinary sections which are recognized for their scientifically and socially distinguished achievements.

“This year’s scholarship classier embodies excellence and scientific services to our communities,” said Sudip S. Parikh, Director General of AAAS and Executive Editor for the family of scientific journals.

“At a time when the future of the scientific company in the United States and in the world is uncertain, their work demonstrates the value of the investment supported in science and engineering,” said Parikh.

Tradition dating from 1874, this program has awarded eminent scientists over the years such as Maria Mitchell, Steven Chu, Ellen Ochoa, Irwin M. Jacobs, Mae Jemison and Ayanna Howard.

Our newly elected AAAS scholarship holders will be honored for their extraordinary achievements during a celebration in person in Washington, DC, on June 7.

Biological sciences

David HasanNeurosurgery teacher

Hasan is recognized for his exceptional contributions to fundamental neuroscience, to the innovative treatment of cerebral aneurysms, and Humanitarian contributions during the war.

Lucia StraderBiology teacher

Strader is known for its distinguished contributions to the field of Plant biologyIncluding the expansion of understanding the molecular foundations controlling the activity of the auxine phytohormone in the growth and development of plants.

Chemistry

Emily DerbyshireEADS family chemistry teacher

Derbyshire studies the chemical biology of the liver stage of malaria infection. It is recognized for the development of new therapies in order to take up a major global health challenge.

Mathematics

Jonathan MattinglyKimberly J. Jenkins Distinguished University Professor of New Technologies in Mathematics

Mattingly is recognized for its revolutionary contributions to the stochastic analysis of fluid equations and other partial stochastic differential equations and calculation methods to understand political redistribution by sampling.

Neuroscience

Staci BilboHaley Family Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience

Bilbo is honored for its distinguished contributions to neuroscience, in particular the impact of the activity of the immune system on brain development And its effects on neural, immune, mood and cognitive functions.

Statistics

Cynthia RudinGilbert, Louis and Edward Lehrman eminent computer teacher

Rudin has a solid record for exceptional research on Machine learning interpretableAnd for important contributions on a wide range of applications.
