Vatican City:
Pope Francis came so close to death at some point during his fight in the hospital against pneumonia that his doctors planned to finish treatment so that the 88 -year -old pontiff could die peacefully, said the Pope’s medical team on Tuesday.
After a respiratory crisis on February 28 which involved Francis to choke almost on his vomit, “there was a real risk that he might not do so,” said Sergio Alfieri, doctor of the Gemelli Hospital in Rome.
“We had to choose if we stopped there and let him go, or to move forward and push him with all possible drugs and therapies, covering the highest risk of damaging his other organs,” Alfieri told Italy Corriere della will be.
Francis, pope since 2013, was treated at Gemelli hospital for 38 days in the most serious health crisis of its 12 -year papacy.
It was admitted on February 14 for bronchitis which turned into a double pneumonia, a particularly serious state for Francis, who had pleurisy as a young adult and had made part of a lung remove.
