- Schwarzenegger offers an awareness of how regular movements can help mobility problems.
- The legend of the “Terminator” recently launched the You will be back Initiative, which allows fans to meet him.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is known for his successful bodybuilding career, his service as governor of California, and his star roles in action -based films such as the franchise “The Terminator”, “Predator” and “Total recall”.
His next movement? Earlier this year, Schwarzenegger and the medical technology company Zimmer Biomet announced the launch of “You will be back. “”
The campaign invites people living with limited mobility due to the hip, knee, shoulder or other joint pain to share their stories for an opportunity to meet the illustrious actor and appear in motivation documentation, which will be launched later this year.
Members of You will be back The online community will have access to resources and a “finding a doctor” tool to connect with local doctors and explore if the joint replacement is suitable for them.
“It is important to take joint pain – either hip, knee or shoulder – because it decreases the quality of life of millions of people,” Healthline Schwarzenegger told Zimmer Biomet in 2024 as director of the movement.
When people suffer, they tend to move less, says Leslie BottrellMD, an orthopedic surgeon at Northwell Lenox Hill hospital. When a known injury causes pain, it is important to take caution with movement until a doctor can determine what causes pain.
However, pain does not always mean that there is a physical injury, she told Healthline.
“Pain is managed by memory and emotions, and often stop completely and not to move can have a harmful effect and lead to a weakening of the muscles and a stiffness, which leads to more pain and limited movement and to the inability to continue to move,” said Bottrell.
The movement is medicine, noted Bottrell, and helps the body as follows:
- The movement promotes synovial fluid, which is the lubricating fluid found in the joints. The synovial fluid provides the cushion joints and softens the movement between the bones.
- The move helps to strengthen muscles, ligaments and tendons around the joint, which causes less pressure on the joint.
- The movement signals the body to send blood to the active area, which contributes to reducing inflammation.
- The displacement triggers endorphins, which are natural pain relievers.
“In addition, as we age, we worry about breaking the bones, but if your muscles are engaged and you are strong, you are less likely to fall compared to if you are weak and atrophied,” said Bottrell.
Schwarzenegger relates to this feeling. He is determined to motivate people to move safely despite the fears and past injuries.
“I understand. It’s scary. I had my own health problems – shoulder surgery,, hip replacementAnd all my heart surgeries for my congenital valve problem, and I think it is very important that I am open on this subject, because I see how it encourages people to act, and not only to give in to their pain, “he said.
Schwarzenegger believes that life is too short to leave pain, fear or uncertainty prevent people from feeling better. “I believe in the sentence:” If you rest, rusts you, “he said.
Healthline has obtained more information from the legendary actor and the former bodybuilder to find out more about his dedication to joint pain and awareness of mobility.
This interview was published and condensed for more clarity and length.
Schwarzenegger: I had to face the joint pain throughout my life. Whether I ride by bike, whether I train in Gold’s Gym or skiing every winter, I am a very active person.
My joints have taken a beat of all heavy work and waterfalls over the years. I had my right part of injuries, but being active is important to me, and I would not change what I did.
I knew when it was time to ask for help, and I did it.
Schwarzenegger: I devoted my life to physical form, so I know the power of movement. My priorities have changed, but my need to never stop moving did not do it.
Even when I participate in Mr. Universe, I took ballet lessons to improve the way I moved my body. Now, I focus on skiing every year with my family, I play with my grandchildren and my animals on weekends or to bike and lift myself up, but I never wanted to stop moving.
As I get older, I thanked myself for all the work I have done in my body in the past because I see how other people who are 78 years old move, and I can say that the foundations that I built have protected me. But I have to continue to push myself and move every year so that I do not rust.
I never want to get to a point where I can’t do things that bring me happiness.
You have to feed your body to move properly – and if there is something that is wrong, make an appointment with your doctor. You alone know when changes occur. Do not report these important conversations because you are afraid.
Schwarzenegger: I talk about it in my Pump Club newsletter and my podcast all the time. The movement is medicine.
When you stop moving, you get in danger for many health problems, including
Listen, I’m not a doctor and I can’t give medical advice. What I know is that you have to be honest with yourself about how pain affects your life and the life of those around you. And sometimes it means putting pride or fear aside and talk to your doctor.
I also know that certain mornings, I feel pain and stiffness in my body and all my brain wants me to do in bed – but I get up and that I do my daily routine of a bicycle ride and a training, and 99% of the time, I feel that the stiffness dark. The movement makes us better.
Schwarzenegger: I always move, move, move! I go bike and train at the gymnasium for 45 minutes a day when I am at home in Los Angeles.
Coherence is important. You must have a routine.
In addition to my lifting and my bike, I ski every winter for as many days as possible. I have been intense to take my steps every day since we shared studies on the power of the movement in the Arnold Pump Club. I realized that even with a bicycle ride and a training session, inactivity, the rest of the day can make you go back.
Schwarzenegger: The vision is important for me and has been since the start of my fitness trip 50 years ago.
If I have no vision – a goal – then I will fail. I think of the person I want to be and why I want to be that person. If I simply say: “I want to be healthy”, it is not enough.
I should know why I do it and what I want to accomplish. I have to see it. This is the key to having something long term, even through challenges. Being active is part of who I am now because I adopt this approach. And I still feel better after moving. I had my own setbacks, but I see them as opportunities.
I will not lie. There are mornings where I feel; I just want to stay in bed. But I get on my bike and drive to the gymnasium. And almost every time, when I go up the gymnasium, the world begins to turn to color. I do not know if it comes from the movement or the feeling of accomplishment when I did not want to do it and that I did it anyway, but there is something magical on this subject.
Most people want to be healthy. They want to move, but there are so many obstacles that it is easy to overwhelm. This is why having a vision is so important – it helps you take the next step.
If your obstacle is pain, I challenge you to imagine your life without it. What could you do? How would that affect your work, your hobbies-your life? Use this vision to overcome fear and uncertainty to speak to a doctor. Don’t wait, act! This is my message.
I want anyone who suffers from pain in his joints knowing that they are not alone and get the information they need to feed their feedback.
It is also important for me to be useful and to use my platform to encourage people to appropriate their health and never stop moving.
If you want to go fast, go alone; If you want to go far, go together. I want to create a community with the return platform, so that people do not feel alone.
