Yokohama, Japan – Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. Today presented its latest autonomous driving technology (AD) in the Minato Mirai region of Yokohama. For the first time in Japan, a driverless test vehicle in the car sailed on a public road in a complex urban environment* ¹. Nissan has developed this owner technology for a mobility service that it plans to launch in Japan.

This is an important step in empowering mobility by resolving the challenges of transport services facing local communities, such as driver shortages resulting from an aging population. By taking advantage of its technology, Nissan will provide a wide range of new services that allow freedom of mobility.

Nissan Maxime his efforts to establish and verify the safety of the technology of the MA adapted to different traffic conditions in the world. To do this, he uses ideas and technologies acquired through research in Japan, research in Silicon Valley conducted by the Nissan Advanced Technology Center and a participation in The Evolvad project of the United Kingdom.

The latest test vehicles are based on the Serena – a best -selling mini -dut in Japan – and incorporate 14 cameras, nine radars and six Lidar sensors. The sensors mounted on the roof offer considerably widened detection by taking advantage of the height of the Serena and allowing more precise detection of its environment, compared to previous test vehicles. In addition, the use of AI has recognition, behavioral prediction and considerably improved judgment, as well as control, offering smooth operation in a variety of complex scenarios.
To guarantee the greatest security for the demonstration of test vehicles, Nissan engineers have verified an extensive number of possible scenarios along the driving track, added an immediate stop function for emergencies and introduces intentional redundancies.

Since the exercise* ² 2017, Nissan has demonstrated and tested advertising technology. Currently, Nissan is planning services to demonstrate services involving approximately 20 vehicles which take place in Yokohama during the financial year 2025 to 2026 and built an operational framework and an ecosystem of service with stakeholders. Take advantage of the results of the tests, during the financial year 2027, Nissan aims to provide autonomous driving mobility services, in collaboration with municipalities and transport operators, with remote monitoring.

This initiative will be promoted in close cooperation with the Ministry of Japan of the Economy, Trade and Industry; the Ministry of Lands, Infrastructures, Transport and Tourism; Other government ministries, and Yokohama City. The ministries will also promote initiatives to create new autonomous mobility services through their level 4 mobility acceleration committee.

Nissan will continue to advance its technology while establishing services in Yokohama according to the results of development and verification in Japan and abroad.

* 1 based on Nissan research. The tests are carried out using distant ad systems equivalent to level 2 automation of the AEE in accordance with the directives of Japan for the approval of the deregulation for vehicles equipped with distant autonomous driving systems and the criteria for granting the authorization for the use of the road in the demonstration tests of the automated driving on public roads. Vehicles are monitored remotely and a remote driver can take control and drive vehicles if necessary.

* 2 Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. The exercises take place from April 1 to March 31.
