While the population of Alberta continues to explode, the need for more accommodation will increase with it, which means that more and more people will have to work in the trades. Over the years, more and more women have decided to take the tools.
Claire Leblanc began in her electrician career, finally choosing to return to school to become a planes maintenance engineer. For her, entering the professions was a simple choice.
“I could enter right away,” said Leblanc. “I could start making money right away, then there was a school that I could do later.”
Leblanc’s daughter, Angeline Noble, who recently obtained her secondary school diploma, hopes to follow in the footsteps of her mother, choosing a career in the trades. They spent Saturday at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (KNOW) during the open day of spring, exploring the many options available.
“I was really looking for something to do with mechanics,” said noble. “Looking at the mechanisms with cars and motorcycles, it was quite interesting.”

Noble continued saying that if it was not for her mother, she would not feel as confident to continue the trades.
“With her being an electrician, she looks more like a model,” said noble. “It is therefore as not only men can be there, but also me too.”
According to Tammy Amstutz with the Calgary Construction Association, the more women join the trades, the better.
“On -site women actually represent less than one in 10, and if we are looking for statistics for the whole industry, it’s barely more than one in 10,” said Amstutz. “We have seen this trendy number on the rise and it is because of the efforts of certain incredible organizations in Calgary and through Alberta.”
And in addition to the large amount of trades, including choosing, Amstutz says that the potential career path in each business has a lot of space for growth.
“Being able to become a superintendent of the site, entering the office as a designer or project manager, there are more ramps and ramps out of ramps in the quarries of the construction industry than most of the others.”
