The College of Applied Science and Technology (Cast) deeply plunges into its recorded student organizations (RSO) through the Cast-In-Action series. This is an opportunity to look in extracurricular activities that shape the life of the student campus through the story of student leaders.
This episode presents a conversation with students in student information technology in America (ITSA) president of the club Neer Jain.
What is the role of ITSA at Illinois State University?
Itsa is an RSO in the Information Technology School (IT) which aims to connect students with professionals in the field of IT, helping them to build precious networks that lead to internships and employment opportunities. We also focus on spreading knowledge on concepts that are generally not covered in school, especially in artificial intelligence (AI).
Can you share your personal career to become the president of ITSA?
I was born in the United States but I moved to India at the age of 6 and in the following years, I faced academic struggles and family medical challenges. My life changed when my father asked me if I wanted to study in the United States for my first cycle diploma. I took the opportunity, I joined Itsa and I finally became its president.
It’s amazing to see how I grew up personally and how Itsa also grew up. For example, we went from a small group of seven members to 30 to 40 active members. This is largely due to our success at the Spring Festival and collaboration efforts with other RSOs such as Women in Technology, which stimulated our recognition and our membership.
Recently, I was invited to attend the first national IA research resource (Nairr) Annual pilot assembly.
What are some of the main facts of ITSA in the past university year?
We have hosted four AI -focused events in the past academic year, including workshops and a film screening. We also organized a social event to help students relax before the exams.
Our social events include games, food and networking opportunities to help students make new friends. These gatherings are excellent because they help promote a feeling of community and collaboration between our members.
What are some of the advantages of being a member of ITSA?
The ITSA has also helped students ensure the possibility of obtaining professional opportunities. Many of our members have acquired internships and projects thanks to their involvement with ITSA. Personally, I obtained an agricultural internship in the state and our vice-president became IBM ambassador.
The more the students are engaged with ITSA, the more they receive opportunities.
What are the biggest challenges in the management of an RSO like ITSA?
The management of the increased workload and the sudden push of the members was difficult. To deal with it, we implement ghost roles for management positions, such as the ghost president and vice-president, to ensure continuity and to also distribute responsibilities more effectively.
How often does itsa meet?
We meet every Wednesday from 6.30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
What can students expect in the next part of the academic year?
Students can hope to participate in a community camp learning community, practice the construction of curriculum vitae and join a very united community.
In addition, under the supervision of our educational advisor, Dr. Elahe Javadi, ITSA members will be able to participate in a number of AI events and workshops where they will be able to learn more about the concepts of AI that they would not generally learn in their courses.
We strongly encourage students to get involved in ITSA activities, which allows them to present projects on their curriculum vitae and improve their chances of obtaining internships.
Final thoughts?
I cannot insist too much on the importance of prioritizing my mental and physical health, especially for student leaders. If you are interested in holding a leadership position or excelling in your efforts as a student, I believe that the maintenance of your well-being is crucial for success.
