Brownwood – March 6, 2025 – The Science and Mathematics School at Howard Payne University recently attended the Texas Academy of Science conference in Waco on February 28 to March 1. Kristen Hutchins, dean of the School of Science and Mathematics and professor of biology, and Dr. Dennis Gibson, assistant professor of chemistry and department of physical sciences, seven students Dennis Gibson. Two seniors were accepted to present their research posters at the conference.
Ethan Cortez, Guy D. Newman Honors Academy and Biomedical Science Double Major in Brownwood, presented a poster entitled: “Environmental stressors on zebra fish and the impact of vitamin D.”
Nolan Godfrey, major in starting biomedical sciences, presented a poster entitled: “Fluorescence microscopy analysis of microplastic interactions with microorganisms.”
The other students who are assisted at the conference were Ian Cortez, Honors Academy and Biochemistry Double Major de Brownwood; Jessi Lloyd, major in the biomedical sciences of Coleman; Kellen McKee, Honors Academy and Biomedical Science Double Major d’Azle; Bailey Nobles, specialist in biomedical sciences of Robstown; and Addysage Seay, Major of Choudrant Biochemistry, La.
According to the Texas Academy of Science, their mission is to “promote student mentoring and the excellence of research through our annual scientific meetings and the publication of the Texas Journal of Science”. Dr. Gibson Sinera on the board of directors of 2025-2026 as vice-president of the Texas Academy of Science.
“I am delighted to accept this role of vice-president of the Texas Academy of Sciences,” said Dr. Gibson. “This will allow me to have a direct impact on the development of the next generation of scientists and to strengthen our collaborations between HPU and other institutions.”
Dr. Hutchins expressed how grateful she was for students who attended the conference and his enthusiasm for the new role of Dr. Gibson.
“I am proud of our students and I like to see their love of science through conference experiences such as heaps. They listen well, ask questions and speak with others about research, which are all aspects of the way we share knowledge in the scientific community. I am also delighted that Dr. Gibson represents HPU as vice-president this year. He will do a great job!
