District 3 supports equity of health and new collaboration to approach disparities in San Antonio
San Antonio (February 28, 2025) – This week, the member of the Council of the District 3 Phyllis Viagra expressed his solid support for the Center for Health Equity in southern Texas (chest), an initiative aimed at approaching the longtime disparities in health in the south of San Antonio and the surrounding communities. The new collaboration will invest in improving access to health, education and support for residents in the southern sector of the medically un served city.
“I would like to thank Dr. Lyssa Ochoa, an endovascular surgeon, and the member of the District 4 Council, Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia, for their leadership in the progress of the vision of the chest, who devotes himself to filling the gap of life expectancy and achieving the equity of health in the south of San Antonio, in particular the council close to East and the South West of South Texas, “said District 3.
The objective is to ensure that everyone, regardless of their economic history, has access to the health and support services they need to lead a healthy and fulfilling life, regardless of their economic history.
Recent data of the 2018-2022 American community survey and the San Antonio 2024 poverty status reporting a dark image of continuous challenges in the South sector, where higher poverty rates, lower education and limited access to essential services are prevailing. These conditions contribute to disproportionate rates of chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma, cancer and liver and renal diseases.
The advocacy continued today at the meeting of the Community Health Committee (CHC) where Dr. Ochoa made a presentation sharing the data, the research and the importance of this initiative.
“The finalization of this city agreement marks an important step in our mission to advance health capital in southern Texas,” said Dr. Ochoa. “With this seed funding, the Center for Health Equity in South Texas can start to approach the deep causes of health disparities and build lasting solutions for our communities. This investment strengthens the city’s commitment to ensure that each resident, regardless of the postal code, has access to quality health care and the resources necessary to prosper. »»
By supporting education, access, investment and collaboration, the chest aims to provide essential resources for residents and make sure they receive the care and support they deserve.
The collaboration with the chest marks an important step to demonstrate the continuous commitment of the city to equity in health.
