It’s the end of an era in video chat like Microsoft announced on Friday that he “retired” Skype Platform in May in favor of focusing on the teams.
The platform, which has been in service since 2003, is best known for its video cats, videoconferencing capacities and vocal calls, in addition to instant messaging, file transfer and appeal-based calls to fixed and mobile phones.
But Microsoft says that he is trying to rationalize his free consumer communications offers “so that we can more easily adapt to the needs of customers”.
Skype will remain available until May 5.
Now, the emphasis is placed on Microsoft teams, the application used by many companies for group calls, meetings, file sharing and workspace cat – several functions that the company also highlights that Skype has also offered.
“Hundreds of millions of people already use teams as a hub for teamwork, helping them to stay connected and get involved at work, at school and at home,” said Microsoft president of collaborative applications and platforms.

Microsoft bought Skype in 2011 and used it to replace its Messenger live Windows. According to a Business blog article In February 2023, more than 36 million people used demand per day.
The company then developed its range of Microsoft 365 products and published the team application in 2017. Desk365.io reported in August 2024 that the teams reached 320 million monthly active users at the start of this year.
With only a few months until Skype is deleted, the company claims that Skype users will be able to use their connections to connect to the free version of the teams on any supported device.
It will start to be available on Friday for those who are part of the teams and programs of Skype initiates, but which will slowly examine more members.
Teper says that if you connect using your Skype account, cats and contacts in your account will automatically appear in the teams “so that you can quickly resume where you stopped.”
Team users will also be able to call and discuss with Skype and Vice-Versa users.
Those who do not want to move to the teams will also be able to export Skype data, which include cats, contacts and call history.
Microsoft has also informed in its article that Skype’s paid features will no longer be available for new customers, including Skype credit and subscriptions used to make and receive international and national calls.
People who still have a Skype subscription can always use their credits until their next renewal period.
Even with the deadline of May 5 for use, Teper added that paid users will always be able to use the Skype dial of the Skype web portal and within the teams after this date.
“Skype has been an integral part of modern communications training and supporting countless significant moments, and we are honored to have been part of the trip,” said Teper.
