Lake Charles, Louisiana (KPLC) – Tuesday Gras is in full swing here in southwest Louisiana!
The elders of the region met on Tuesday for the Gala Krewe of Golden Years at Lake Charles Event Center.
The annual Krewe of the Golden Years has danted hundreds of seniors from all southwest Louisiana, taking advantage of live music and showing the culture of Louisiana.
The gala for people aged 60 and over was an opportunity to go out and enjoy the pleasure of Mardi Gras.
“Well, I am a musician anyway; I played music. I did the west entertained and everything else, so anyway, it’s all in Louisiana, you know. It’s good! “Said Pat Doolan King, a resident of the Moss Bluff Senior Center.
Several nursing homes have brought their elders out to take advantage of the festivities.
Some of the elders have been honored to be kings and queens of their senior centers.
“It’s a pleasure to represent them,” said Herbert Green.
The event was organized by the Calcasieu Council on aging and sponsored by Lyondellbasell.
“This event is our way of ensuring us to keep our good local traditions from Louisiana to ensure that our elders can enjoy Gras Tuesday in all its splendor. This is our way of ensuring that if they cannot go out at night or if they cannot go to the parades, they go out the day to enjoy Mardi Gras and all its festivities, “said Jacqueline Green.
Estella Bushnell is the Queen of the Senior Center Westlake who is from Oklahoma. She appreciates her first experience of Mardi Gras during the event.
“I love it! I love the festivities, I love the story of it and I like them to keep it alive so that the youngest learn it,” said Bushnell.
