West Palm Beach, Florida (CBS12) – Atrial fibrillation (AFIB), one of the most common cardiac arrhythmias, is an increasing concern in the United States and in the world, said Dr. David Weisman, clinical cardiac director of Jupiter Medical Center.
“Atrial fibrillation is a serious condition,” said Dr. Weisman. “Patients feel really bad. They feel breathtaking. They feel like their heart is beating.
Dr. Weisman warned that AFIB could cause serious complications, including stroke, heart attack and heart failure. He highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.
“If you feel one of these types of symptoms, you should really be checked,” he said. “Go see your primary care doctor at least or even a cardiologist.”
Weisman has recommended an electrocardiogram (EKG) and perhaps a monitor to diagnose the condition with precision. He also highlighted the importance of lifestyle changes, such as exercise, weight loss, non-smokes and reducing alcohol consumption.

For diagnosed with AFIB, Dr. Weisman noted that there are effective treatment options, including mini-invasive drugs and catheter removal.
“We have very good treatment options,” he said. “Many patients who end up seeing me, for example, will be offered a type of mini-invasive treatment.”
The Jupiter Medical Center also explores new procedures, such as the “Watchman” procedure, which aims to treat heart rate disorder and reduce the need for anticoagulants.
“Many patients who undergo these treatments feel better afterwards and many of them are happy,” said Dr. Weisman. “It’s less recovery, it’s less cost, it’s less anesthesia.”
Dr. Weisman urged individuals to listen to their bodies and seek a diagnosis if they suspect that they may have Afib.
