The Elon Year of Service Fellows program offers students a unique opportunity to engage directly with community partners while acquiring invaluable professional experience. Frieda Walsh Seaman ’24, the scholarship has proven to be a central stage in its career towards a career in public health.

“I would say that if your only fear has the impression that you do not progress because you are working in the same place you have obtained, then you have the twisted story,” said Frieda. “This scholarship was the biggest step that I could have taken for my career and adulthood. This allowed me to develop crucial work environment skills while strengthening my confidence, helping me kiss adulthood and overcome the sham syndrome. »»

At the Alamance county health service, Frieda’s work is both impactful and multifaceted. It is currently engaged in the implementation and analysis of the colony of opioids thanks to tactics to reduce harm. In addition, she studies strategies based on evidence aimed at improving the recovery of substance consumption disorders and the reversal of overdose, which in order to improve results for the local community.

By reflecting on her experience, Frieda noted that her contributions, although sometimes considered a small piece of broader effort, already make a significant difference.

“I believe that my work contributes to a county in better alamance health,” she said. “I received comments from people who were affected by my training and efforts, which inspired me to develop a passion for the wider population in public health.”

His positive experiences have still encouraged him to continue a master’s degree in public health as the next step in his career.

The Department of Health of the County of Alamance continues to serve as an essential partner to promote community well-being, and the dedication of Frieda highlights the powerful role that learning based on service can play both in the professional and personal growth. With a network of mentors and peers supporting her, she is ready to continue her journey in public health – transforming challenges in opportunities and hope inspiring throughout the community.

The story of Frieda testifies to the impact transformer of the Elon Year of Service Fellows program, demonstrating that significant community engagement benefits local residents, but also offers students the skills and confidence necessary to forge successful careers and focused on the lens.
