The Republicans of the Senate took a major step to advance President Donald TrumpThe radical radical program early Friday morning, voting to adopt a budgetary plan which sets up a confrontation with the republicans of the Chamber, which presented a competitor plan.
The final vote came after a rare night work session for the Senate which started Thursday evening and spread in the early hours of the next day, ending almost 5 am Friday after having lasted a little less than ten hours. The final count was 52 to 48 years, the Senator of Gop Rand Paul joining the Democrats to oppose the resolution.
During the end of the evening session known as “vote-a-rama”, the Democrats tried to force difficult votes for the Republicans on a list of disputed questions, including the war in Ukraine, the department of ‘Elon Musk government efficiency, known as Doge, and protect Medicare and Medicaid from cuts while Republicans seek to adopt the legislative priorities of Trump.
Budget resolution is a non -binding plan that does not carry the right of law. But the framework must be adopted first before the Senate Republicans could adopt legislation on an online vote of the party without the support of Democrats thanks to a process known as reconciliation. Republicans plan to use this mechanism to transmit what they hope to be Trump’s Trump’s legislative achievements.
Trump has approved a competitor plan of the Republicans of the Chamber which is larger, but that has not prevented the Republicans of the Senate from continuing, a sign of the challenges that the Republicans of the Congress are confronted when they sail on narrow majority and a divergent strategy.
The leaders of the GOP of the house plan to bring their sprawling budgetary plan on Tuesday on the ground, according to two sources of the GOP.
The room and the Senate will have to reconcile their different approaches to find a path to follow. But even if the agreement is concluded on the budgetary level, the process of drafting the text of the real legislation is likely to be controversial and to involve meticulous negotiations which could extend over the months, which could open Divisions within the GOP in the process.
The Senate Republicans presented a budgetary resolution which would strengthen the financing of the application of immigration, national security and energy production. On the other hand, the Republicans of the Chamber have a larger plan which would allow them to fight against tax policy, a critical question that the Republicans of the Senate wish to take later within the framework of a second legislative set.
The Republicans of the Chamber, with a thin majority like a razor, want to approach all the main priorities of the party in a single bill in order to do everything at the same time. The Senate Republicans, on the other hand, want the party to win an early victory on important questions for voters, such as the border, before moving on to tax policy, a thorny question that can take more time – and prove to be More difficult – for the party to put on the needle.
Trump called on the two chambers to pass the plan of the house on Wednesday, saying on Truth Social that he implements “my first full program of America, everything, not only parts of it!” But the president weighed with praise for the Republicans of the Senate while the marathon voting session began on Thursday evening. “Thank you to the head of the majority John Thune and the Republican Senate, for having worked so hard to finance the order of the border Trump,” he said on Truth Social. “Your work on the financing of this effort is greatly appreciated!”
Democrats force votes on Ukraine, Doge and protecting Medicaid and Medicare
The Democrats of the Senate, locked up beyond power in Washington and limited in their ability to counter the GOP agenda, used the “vote-a-rama” to force difficult votes in order to put the Republicans to register on controversial questions.
The Democrats tried to paint the Republicans like the Party of the Rich during the long voting session of the marathon – and were sometimes able to take off certain votes from the GOP.
GOP senator, Susan Collins, of Maine, has argued an amendment blocking tax cuts for billionaires while food prices remain high, and GOP Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri voted with Democrats for a measure intended to reduce houses. However, no amendment has received enough support to be adopted.
The Democrats of the Senate also called an amendment to support Ukraine against Russian aggression. However, the amendment did not obtain support for the GOP and the vote failed. The president of the Senate of Armed Services, Roger Wicker, argued that the budgetary resolution was “not the right adaptation” for the question.
“There is no bigger Ukraine in the Senate than me, but it is not the right choice,” said the Mississippi Republican. Wicker added: “There is a place to talk about Ukraine. It is not this place.
Democratic Senator Chris Coons called an amendment to prohibit Doge from accessing or abusing private data and information, which has been rejected by vocal vote.
The first amendment offered by the republican of the voting session at the end of the evening of the marathon came from the Senator of the Dan Sullivan Gop of Alaska in order to show his support for the MEDICARE and MEDICAID party.
It was adopted 51-49, most of the Senators of the GOP voted in support, with the exception of the senses. John Curtis and Mike Lee voting with the Democrats against him. The Democrats argued that the amendment would not really protect people on Medicare and Medicaid.
The effort of the GOP to show his support for Medicare and Medicaid in the Senate is notable because some Republicans of the Chamber have raised concerns concerning the future of Medicaid in particular while the room is preparing to go ahead with his own budgetary plan, which is different from the Senate plan.
Reading, snacks and virtual visits: how the senators spent time between the votes
Senators found a variety of ways to stay entertained while the room stayed in session overnight.
While the Senate had launched its votes at the end of the evening Thursday evening, the Senator of Gop Thom Tillis caught a large bowl of popcorn and entered the republican locker room.
Republican senator Markwayne Mullin took time between chairing the ground and voting to make a virtual visit to the Capitol to his disciples on X, publishing dispatches from the rotunda and the Capitol crypt throughout the night.
“As you heard: we are voting-a-rama in the Senate. I don’t mind fighting, but what? The Liberals know that they will not win, “he subtitled a video from the rotunda. “Anyway, here is another mini tour.”
Mullin is also the current occupant of the Senate Candy Desk – whatever the senator who is assigned, the office is responsible for keeping him lots of treats for their colleagues. However, he noted that he obtained “a little flower” for green candies on the theme of Saint-Patrick he provided.
“I think I’m going to have to swivel Easter,” he joked.
Other senators have spent time chatting with their colleagues or sitting in their office on the ground, sliding on their phones, going through modifications and reading.
