Honolulu (Hawaiinewsnow) – Secondary students in Oahu put their knowledge of life skills on Friday.

Students of the secondary schools of Kalani and Waipuhu and the Iolani school participated in a competition of spectacle style which covered subjects such as personal finance, the environment, technology, health and safety and rights and responsibilities consumers.

It was the last cycle at the state of a national competition through Lifesmarts, an educational program that prepares students to enter the real world by teaching them the life skills they need to succeed .

The competition has been moderate by our own Ben Gutierrez and was sponsored locally by the Ministry of Commerce and Hawaii Consumption Affairs for more than two decades.

Deputy Director Dean Hazama said the objective was to teach students “life skills so that they know how to do their finances, what to do in the economy, what companies do, as well as others skills like weather. ”

Teams of four to five students train for a year before the competition, said Hazama.

In the end, the Iolani school came out in the lead. The five students and their coach will go to Chicago in April to compete for the national title.

The Maryknoll school in Hawaii won the national championship in 2023.

Lifesmarts is managed by the National Consumer League and brought to Hawaii by the DCCA business registration division and the insurance division in partnership with Hawaii Credit League.
