A new survey suggests that more than a quarter of Canadians – 27% – now see the United States as a “enemy” countryWhile an additional 30% still say they consider the United States as an ally.
27% more respondents to the LEGER survey said they considered the United States as a “neutral” country.
The survey comes as US President Donald Trump threatens to impose economically devastating prices in Canada and has repeatedly pushed Canada to become an American state.
The ballot was led between February 14 and February 17 and questioned 1,500 Canadians and 1,000 Americans. Because he was led online, he cannot be awarded a margin of error.
The results also echo a Recent Ipsos survey for world news This revealed that 68% of Canadians interviewed think less of the United States as a country after Trump’s pricing threat. Almost half of all respondents, 46%, said they had strongly held this negative perception.
Sébastien Dallaire, executive vice-president of Leger for eastern Canada, said it was surprised “to see the Canadians so divided on this front when the United States has been an ally for such a long period, and a strongly ally. “
He said that “the enemy” is a “strong word”.

“The answers mainly speak of the level of animosity that we are currently feeling in Canada and which are triggered a sort of wider effect of Rallye-le-Pilote in all aspects of our life,” said Dallaire.

Only one percent of Americans said they considered that they considered Canada as an enemy country, while 56% said they considered Canada as an ally.
A overwhelming majority of Canadians do not like Trump; 74% of respondents said they had an unfavorable vision of the American president. Dallaire said it was “difficult to get more consensual results when asking a question like this.”
Seven percent said they didn’t know enough about Trump to offer an opinion, while only 13% overall said they had a favorable opinion on him.
This number is higher among supporters of the Conservative Party; 27% of them said they had a favorable vision of Trump, against only five and seven percent of liberal supporters and NPD, respectively.
Conservatives were also more likely to have a positive vision of the United States – 48% of conservative supporters interviewed described it as an ally, while only 18% call it an enemy state.

Only 20% of Liberals and 21% of NPD supporters said that the United States were an ally, while 37% of liberal supporters and 34% of new Democrats said it was an enemy. Almost half of Quebec Bloc voters – 47% – said the United States was an enemy country.
“There is a partisan difference in terms of what people think,” said Dallaire. “It is clearly a big gap between conservative supporters and liberal supporters, NPD and block.”
The professional survey industry, the Canadian Research Research Council, says online surveys cannot be given a margin of error because they do not sample the population.
