Wabtec’s advanced technology team shows a new potential technology for the rail industry in downtown Pittsburgh.

The team gives an overview of certain potential high -tech technologies in the rail industry. The main objective is to see if the technology is deserves to Wabtec customers.

The team gave Action News 4 of Pittsburgh a look closely on some of the prototypes.

This includes the Raighost, which would help inspect the wagons.

“As a train is parked, preparing to go out, you can have this sleigh that crosses the wagons and makes critical inspections,” said Milan Karunaratne, vice-president of advanced digital technology at Wabtec.

Another prototype is teleoperations, which would allow someone to operate a locomotive hundreds of kilometers away.

One of the main prototypes on display is massive equipment called Maverick, which would work as a truck service on the rail.

“If we had a locomotive designed to transport a shorter train, and which could bring this type of quality of service and a type of operation just in time, what could this mean to unlock this new market for ‘industry?” Karunaratne said.

One of the main objectives of the team is to ensure that a human is in the room and involved when using these new potential technologies.

All new developments in technology work together at a certain level, said Karunaratne.

“If you are going to have something like that, which is an asset without crew, at least on board, we will always need a human in the loop that will be an exceptional operator. These are teleoperations, right? So we started to build this with this as a northern star, “he said.

It could be a while before we saw one of these prototypes used by customers.
