Vancouver, bc. – The Paralympic style sports competition for members of military service around the world is there. The first Invictus winter games in Whistler in Vancouver, Canada are from February 8 to 16. “The American team is ready,” said SGT Master of the Army. Mike Haley de Socom, whose competition sports are biathlon, rowing, swimming, wheelchair rugby and basketball in wheelchair. He won gold at biathlon and money in wheelchair basketball with his teammates.

The main sergeant of the infantry explained how its route to adaptive sports began while perfecting its skills as an army jump instructor. “I had a bad landing on one of my jumps, and the result of this landing is what caused my spinal cord injury, and I also broke my femur. I had an impact on the ground at around 55 or 60 miles per hour, “said Haley.

The accident occurred in July 2021, leaving Haley with a broken right leg and a paralyzed left leg. Its recovery at the recovery unit of Fort Stewart soldiers included adaptive sports. Haley Excellait, after participating in Team Army at 2023 Warrior Games Challenge in San Diego, where he won archery medals, in races in wheelchair and digital advantage and five gold medals in swimming. It is honored to be part of the team we go to the Invictus winter games and share an overview of this world platform thanks to adaptive sports.

“The way I see it, adaptive sports find a way to give us something, the members of the service. For each person, it’s different. It is not only a question of sporting activity, but of being with the other members of the service who have gone through the same thing. I interacted with other athletes, leading even recently to Invictus, who suffered injuries with spinal cord and saw me in a splint and saw me walking. They didn’t even know it was an option for someone who was in a wheelchair. Sometimes it is the interactions we can have with people from our community who understand our language and some of the things we have experienced. These interactions with other athletes make emotional support for certain athletes. »»

Haley explains that this path to recovery creates an awareness of what can be “can”, especially for those who have trouble abandoning what was in the past. “A game is an inspiring support where they see people who are better than them or on a uniform playground, and you can lead each other to try to be better in your sport. Being injured, sick or injured may make you think that something has been removed, but inspiration is in adaptive sports for what you can do. Sometimes you recover something, and it’s always different for each person.

Gelling with his teammates in the Utah training camps in Lake Placid in JBLM, Haley feels good about what they worked on. “Regarding the personality, I would say that there are so many people in a team who smiles us and who have good jokes, and you know they want to have a good time, but you can see a fiery competitive advantage In their eyes if you are looking for it.

He says that his favorite sport to compete in Winter Invictus is biathlon. “I don’t know how winter sports will be honestly seeking. We are going against places like Norway, Switzerland and Canada; They were in the snow all their lives. I come from Florida, and you can only imagine how little snow I see there, “said Haley.
