When most people think of the learning sciences for young people, they envisage silent classrooms filled with textbooks, structured lessons and exams. But what happens if there was a way to live science in a more exciting, engaging and unforgettable way?
Summer camps based on science, such as those offered by UF / IFAS Leon County Extension, give young people the opportunity to explore the wonders of science in a practical and real framework.
In 4-H, the youth development branch of the UF / IFAS extension, we think that the best way to learn is to do. Our camps focus on interactive and practical activities that allow campers to apply scientific knowledge in real contexts. This philosophy “Learn by makes” encourages children to engage directly with science, which makes experience more significant and memorable.
While traditional education is often based on structured textbooks and courses, the summer camp offers a dynamic approach to learning. At the camp, science comes to life while young people are encouraged to observe, interact and experience on the natural world – test hypotheses and document new discoveries.
This immersive environment promotes curiosity, creativity and critical thinking, with minimal class time and a lot of practical exploration.

A perfect complement to traditional education
One of the best aspects of science based on science is the way they complete and strengthen what is learned in fall and spring.
While the school year focuses on structured lessons and the knowledge of textbooks, camp activities offer young people the possibilities to engage with scientific principles in a practical and exploratory manner.
Whether it is to study plant growth, investigate local ecosystems or identify the preferences of insects, campers can experience science through first -hand exploration. This approach not only maintains engaged children, but also helps them to keep and rely on their knowledge base.
Trigger curiosity and discovery
One of the most exciting aspects of the summer camp is an opportunity for children to discover their passions and to light their curiosity. Whether it is to experience cooking, to explore the ecology of fauna or to plunge into the fascinating world of insects, Camp offers a wide range of possibilities for young people to engage in different scientific fields.
Take our summer camp to Entomology, for example. Campers explore the world of insects through practical activities such as insect hunts, housing studies and even a night experience.
By studying insects, campers acquire a more in -depth understanding of the scientific method – asking questions, training hypotheses, testing ideas and observing the results. These experiences help strengthen scientific concepts learned at school and introduce new skills that may not be covered in class.
