  • The council of the canton of Edison approved a change prescription of $ 557,000 for the construction of the Edison Sport Building on Central Avenue
  • This last change order, the third for the project, will increase the cost of the project to $ 11,628,247.45
  • The project should now take about seven more months to finish

Edison – The price to build the Edison Sports building on Central Avenue has just become higher – of $ 500,000.

This is due to a modification prescription of $ 557,000 unanimously approved Monday by the Canton Council which traveled the project formerly envisaged from $ 5 million to more than $ 11.6 million.

The order of modification, a modification of the original contract, is the third for this project with the epic management of Piscataway.

No member of the Council was satisfied with the increase in costs or the additional time for the project which was to be completed last month, but they thought that the project had to go ahead.

Rendered from the New Edison Sports Recreation Center provided for central avenue in the southern part of the canton.

The director of companies Sonia Alves-Viveiros said that there were delays and conditions that extended the calendar for completion at the end of this year.

The resolution authorizing the modification prescription cites unforeseen conditions such as the weather, the requirements of public services and changes, resulting in cost-effects in terms of connection, insurance and labor cost.

A large part of the change stems from the overhaul of public services, in particular electrical service and water, from a line of 6 inch to 8 inch and the PSEG gas service, officials said.

Alves-Viveiros reminded the members of the Council that the canton had problems with the architect, on which the canton continues to work.

Officials said it should take an additional seven months or less to complete the project.

A date of completion of November 25 has been set, which is at the end of the football season, which means that the children of this program will not be able to use the establishment this year, said advisor Richard Brescher.

Once finished, the building should be used for cheerleading, struggle, football, basketball, butt and other youth activities all year round.

Alves-Viveiros said the cost of the change order was initially $ 656,000, but that it was negotiated in recent months at $ 557,000 for Epic to manage the project. Under the modification prescription, the $ 557,000 should not be exceeded.

“I think it’s very, very expensive for seven months of additional work,” said city councilor ASAF Shmuel.

Without approval of the order of modification, the canton could have needed to hire a lawyer for complaints, an additional cost, as recourse, said officials.

In addition, the project would stop and the canton would have a construction shell, which would be a danger, said Alves-Viveiros.

“I am not happy to see the orders of change,” said advisor to advisor Joe Coyle.

The Vice-President of the Council, John Poyner, accepted and the president of the Council, Margot Harris, said that the residents are not satisfied when they see as many changes of change on a project.

Rich Brown, the construction director, said that more minor change orders of less than $ 100,000 are possible because the costs of labor and materials increase.

Brescher, who worked in construction, said he had asked that the canton had a construction director at the start of the project, during the design phase to get things done. The canton hired a construction director last year following problems with a roof change order.

“This is the problem here. This is the subject of the order of change. Because if we had a construction director at the start during the design phase, it would not be here,” said Brescher. “I talked about it but no one wanted to hear it.”

Board members suggested that the canton should have a construction director for each project more than $ 5 million.
