The Spring Arts season at W&M promises a wide range of entertainment

Williamsburg – The William & Mary Office of the Arts recently announced its first gifts William & Mary! The season will continue this spring with American Roots concerts, Hamlet, a dance production dedicated to the Beatles, a series of Masterclass and more.

Benjamin Verdery and the Ulysse string quartet open up with a concert that William & Mary declared celebrates the diversity of styles and voices that make up the American musical heritage, starring the compositions of guitarist Benjamin Verdery and violinist Christina Bouey . The concert takes place on January 31 at 7:30 p.m. in the concert hall of the Music Arts Center (Mac) located in 551 Jamestown Road.

The actors of the London Stage (AFTLS) will be in residence from February 3 to 7, presenting a performance of Hamlet on February 5 at 7:30 p.m. Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall (PBK) Glenn Close Theater. Founded in 1975, AFTLS is one of the oldest Shakespeare theater companies in the world.

Ranky tanky winner of a Grammy – a sentence from Gullah for “Get Funky” – are five friends for life from South Carolina that the notes of the University have imposed themselves as ambassadors for their culture and their local community, helping to Preserve traditions from African-Americans in the coast of the South Coast during slavery. Ranky Tanky will perform on February 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Glenn Close Theater from PBK.

Goitse – Gaelic for “come here” and pronounced Go -Wit -Cha – a quintet awarded several times, mixes the original compositions with traditional Irish tunes. Goitse will perform on February 23 at 2 p.m. in the Mac Concert Hall.

Michael Cleveland, an artist Bluegrass winning Grammy, will also perform this season. The university said that with an encyclopedic memory for melodies and an intuition for improvisation, its music is rooted in tradition and fueled by its melodic imagination. Cleveland will perform on March 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mac Concert Hall.

The Peacherine Ragtime Society orchestra will revisit music and silent films at the beginning of the 20th century in a performance co-presensed at the International Arts Festival. The orchestra of 12 people gives life to classic silent films with live music and sound
Effects. The group occurs on March 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Glenn Close Theater from PBK.

Terrance, twice winner of a Grammy, Simien and the Zydeco Experience Band played a concert on April 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mac Concert Hall. Driven by African and Caribbean rhythms, Zydeco’s music has evolved from its traditional acoustic roots to include more popular genres such as rock, funk, R&B, rap and hip hop.

William & Mary also announced a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Beatles SGT. The album of the Lonely Hearts Club of Pepper: Mark Morris Dance Group presents Pepperland. An original score between the arrangements of seven songs from the album with six original pieces inspired by pepper. Mark Morris Dance Group will perform on May 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Glenn Close Theater from PBK.

Coparraine by the Virginia Arts Festival, Edgar Meyer, the only bass player to have received the Avery Fisher Prize, is joined by the violinist Tessa Lark and the cellist / composer Joshua Roman for a concert that includes Bach and the original music of Meyer. The trio will occur on May 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mac Concert Hall.

With the support of the Elliot E. and Helen Y. Cohen Forum Endowment, the MasterClass series of the Arts du Charles Center offers professional artists opportunities to connect with the Williamsburg community. Featured masterclasses include Benjamin Verdery, the Ulysses String Quartet and Mark Morris Dance Group. A complete calendar of the Masterclasses offered is available on the Charles Center website.

All tickets for Arts Quarter events are available in electronic form only and can buy online at wm.universityickets.com. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the box office of Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall on the William & Mary campus on each performance from ninety minutes before.
