Pre-authorization reference derogation
In addition to the extension of the deadline, the DHA has now given up the requirement for pre-authorization of references to ambulatory specialty care for tricare premium in the West region. This means that specialized care providers authorized in Tricare can now offer ambulatory care without waiting for Triwest to approve the references of your primary care manager (PCM). However, you must always get a reference from your PCM before receiving this specialized care. This process is effective until March 31 and is retroactive on January 1, 2025.
This renunciation does not apply to the following services:
- Care for hospitalized patients
- Applied behavior analysis or autistic care demonstration services
- Laboratory developed tests
- Prolonged health care options
If you need one of the four services listed above, Triwest must pre-authorize your reference before seeing a specialist.
