The Trump administration indefinitely canceled the meetings of an advisory committee on health technologies responsible for helping to formulate rules concerning the use of data and tools of artificial intelligence in health care, according to a memo obtained by stat.

The brief memo, broadcast early Wednesday, informs members of the Consultative Committee on Health Information Technologies (Hitac) that all the meetings of the Committee and its working groups are canceled until further notice. The Committee operates under the office of the Ministry of Health and Social Services of the Deputy Secretary for Technological Policy and National Coordinator of Health Information Technologies (ASTP-ONC).

Cancellation arrives at a crucial time for regulations in the use of health technology, as industry companies move quickly to adopt artificial intelligence products to automate files and make decisions concerning patient care. While many organizations hope that AI will be able to facilitate administrative charges and reduce costs, the Hitac Committee, and the rules it has helped to formulate, are designed to create protections for patients at a time of innovation fast.
