As part of their efforts to adopt a massive set of taxes, immigration and discounts of expenditure, the Républicains of the Chamber are considering plans to shave billions of the federal budget. Some of these cuts could affect Medicaid and the related health insurance program, which nearly 80 million children, seniors, disabled people, parents and adults without charge Count on intensive care.

Most American adults say they don’t want to see a decrease in Medicaid spending, according to a Recent KFF survey.

It is not yet clear what changes, if necessary, would be brought to the programs. These decisions will be Done during meetings on Capitol HThe sick legislators, but the republican legislators voted to adopt a budgetary plan in April which gave the Chamber of Energy and Trade Instructions to shave $ 880 billion in funding from the Committee’s Jurisdiction Programs. Medicaid is one of these programs.

GOP leaders said they wanted to eliminate Waste, fraud and abuse. However, it is uncertain if the republican legislators could reach the higher level of the cuts that have been proposed without affecting the advantages.

More than 60 republicans of the Chamber represent districts with registration in Medicaid above average, according to a CNN analysis of Medicaid registration data and electoral results of 2024.

While most republican districts do not depend strongly on the program, The historically tight margin of President Mike Johnson In the House means that it can only afford a handful of republican votes “no” to make changes to Medicaid without the help of the Democrats.

Only 29% of republican districts have higher medicaid registration rates than the average, against more than half of the districts represented by the Democrats. This is due, in part, to the fact that on the 10th States that have not chosen to extend Medicaid Red Lean (with the exception of Wisconsin where the legislature controlled by the GOP has long blocked the expansion). Almost 40% of household republicans represent these states.

Most legislators of the Energy and Trade Committee taking into account the modifications made to Medicaid represent the districts with relatively low registration rates of Medicaid, compared to all the other districts of the house, CNN revealed. Almost three -quarters of the Committee Republicans and more than half of the Democrats on the committee come from districts that fall below the national district average.

Their colleagues will closely monitor – in particular those who represent high -efficiency districts and those who won in close margins in November.

The analysis of CNN revealed that 49 of the 64 GOP legislators representing districts with a strong registration of Medicaid won their races by a wider margin than President Donald Trump during the 2024 elections – raising the questions on the amount of appetite to implement the program reductions.

Among these 64 republican legislators who represent high-performance districts, five of them won their races in November in a tight margin of 5 points: representatives Nick Begich (AK-AL), Juan Ciscomani (AZ-6), Ken Calvert (CA-41), Jeff Hurd (CO-3) and Rob Bresnan (PA-8).

Republicans representing districts with high registration rates in Medicaid could face more pressure to break the parties of the parties during a vote to reduce the financing of the program – in particular those who won in close races last year and those who surpassed Trump, including those who ran as moderate. A group of moderate house republicans – including Bresnahan, Ciscomani and Hurd – Recalled the management of the room in a letter that they “helped to deliver a republican majority” and would not support a bill which included reductions in the benefits of Medicaid.

“We cannot and do not support a final law of final reconciliation which includes any reduction in the coverage of Medicaid for vulnerable populations,” they wrote on April 14.

About half of the dozens of legislators who have signed the letter represents Medicaid populations greater than average and almost all have won their districts with a wider margin than Trump in November.

Bresnahan and Ciscomani had already joined four other republican members of the conference Hispanic conference to report a letter To Johnson in February warning against the Medicaid cups. Bresnahan also published a statement in response to Budget reconciliation negotiationsBy saying: “If a bill is put before me which empties the advantages on which my neighbors count, I will not vote for that.”

There are also a certain number of GOP senators who have expressed concerns about supporting any proposal that remodels or fundamentally reduces the advantages of Medicaid, including Senator Josh Hawley who declared earlier this year: “I am very skeptical about the Medicaid cuts which lead to reductions in services.”

“I do not want any reductions in services. If someone has ideas to reform the system, I am open to that, but it would be better not to be code for reductions in services,” he told CNN in February.

The Senate Republicans are currently holding a majority of 53 to 47.

New Mexico and California, each represented by two Democratic senators, direct the country with the highest registration rates in November 2024. A third of voters represented by two GOP senators, however, have higher medicaid and chip registration rates than the average.

Of all states with two GOP senators, Alaska has the highest registration rate, ranking fourth nationally, in December 2024 – with one in three residents registered in the health care program. Senator Lisa Murkowski is committed to protecting access to Alaska and Fight the sections on the program.

Louisiana, represented by the Republican senses. John Neely Kennedy and Bill Cassidy also ranks in the first five states with the highest registration rates of Medicaid and Chip.
