Last year it was the battle of Oppenheimer And barbie in cinemas and Oscars 2024. But this year the focus is on music with musicals Emilie PérezBroadway musical adaptation Wicked and musical biopic of Bob Dylan A complete stranger.
The highly anticipated 2025 Oscars the nominations were revealed Thursday morning by Rachel Sennott, who starred in Saturday eveningAnd Saturday evening live star Bowen Yang. The nominations were pushed back almost a week from their initial date due to California wildfires.
Emilie Péreza musical/melodrama/crime thriller by filmmaker Jacques Audiard, set a new record for the most nominations for an international film with 13 nominations, including best film. The film breaks the record set by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Rome (2018), which previously earned 10 nominations each.
The film’s star, Karla Sofía Gascón, who plays Emilia Pérez, made Oscar history by becoming the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for an Academy Award as she was nominated for Actress in a Leading Role.
Zoe Saldaña also received a nomination for Emilie Pérezfor Supporting Actress. In the film, she plays Rita, a Mexico City lawyer hired by cartel leader Manitas to help him flee Mexico for gender confirmation surgery.
Other notable films include The Brutalistwith Adrien Brody, and Wickedwith Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, both earning 10 nominations.
Conan O’Brien is set to host the 97th Academy Awards, taking place March 2 at the Dolby Theater, with a live television broadcast beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
